Postgraduate Award: Subject Pedagogy Development (Prince’s Teaching Institute)
Warwick Institute of Education (WIE) is pleased to offer a PG Award of 30 Masters-level credits in conjunction with The Prince’s Teaching Institute (PTI), that seeks to recognise the high quality CPD offered by attendance at PTI events.
Students will be expected to engage critically and analytically with their subject specialism. They will develop their subject knowledge and understanding to teach and to critically reflect on their subject specialism. As specialist teachers, students are expected to know their subject and how to teach it from KS3 to KS5. In particular they will deepen and update their subject knowledge and engage with some of the current issues which affect the teaching and practice of in their subject specialism. Specialist teachers will be expected to extend their skills and subject knowledge beyond the classroom, providing additional learning opportunities at lunch time and after school for young people through extra-curricular provision.
The programme reflects upon the body of knowledge and skills needed for teaching at KS3, KS4 and KS5 and the main teaching strategies used in the subject specialism. Drawing on relevant research and official documentation it will also provide opportunity for students to develop their critical understanding of emergent theory, policy and practice. The course will include a theoretical, critical and practical exploration of:
- Progression from KS3 to KS5
- Current issues in the teaching of their subject
- Frameworks for evaluating and developing subject teaching
- Assessment issues in the subject specialism
- Government policy in relation to the subject specialism
The PG Award will require the individual to attend 2 PTI one day events, or the PTI New Teacher Subject Days course, which will be supplemented with 1 Day at WIE plus selected academic reading. Participants would use the knowledge gained to inform some classroom activity, possibly an assigned task related to an area of interest and would submit an assignment based upon their own practice and the learning acquired through this activity. The assignment would be agreed by negotiation with the University of Warwick – it will consist of a 5000 word assignment, broken down into a 2000 word portfolio of evidence and a 3000 word evaluation of the application of the learning outcomes in their school. Individual guidance will be provided by Ian Abbott, the course leader.
