The Prince's Teaching Institute today announced its programme of events for secondary school teachers for the summer term 2010.
It includes Continuous Professional Development courses for teachers at a variety of levels. These events aim to introduce teachers to the latest academic thinking on areas of the national curriculum, and develop and exchange ideas with their peers as to how best to communicate these topics to their pupils.

Using Games in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics
Friday 11th June 2010, Brunel’s Boardroom, Bristol
A day devoted to the use of games in Maths. The event will focus on exploring the ways in which games can not only enhance and engage students in the pursuit of Mathematics, but also how games have been used, throughout history, to convey mathematical meaning and support mathematical thinking. Speakers include Prof David Singmaster, Rubik’s cube expert and formerly Professor of Mathematics at London South Bank University and Prof Jorge Nuno Silva, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Lisbon.

Romeo and Juliet with the Royal Shakespeare Company
Tuesday 15th June, Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester
A day devoted to Romeo and Juliet. The day features an introductory lecture by Dr Mark Llewellyn, and a practical workshop from the RSC Education team. Teachers attending the event will receive clear practical guidance on teaching Romeo and Juliet to pupils of all abilities, consider the iconic nature of Romeo and Juliet as part of the Shakespeare canon, deepen their knowledge of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays and develop pupil-led strategies for studying the plot, character and theme of the play. It will be very useful in helping provide context and challenge combined with a highly practical approach to teaching Shakespeare, transferable to his other plays.

Stretch and Challenge for A2 Biology
Wednesday 16th June, The Wellcome Collection, London
Due to unprecedented teacher demand we are repeating our Autumn 2009 one-day CPD event devoted to stretch and challenge at A2. The new A2 specifications for Biology introduced for the 2009/10 academic year include several topics that generate debate in society, and as a consequence in the classroom. This event will refresh delegates knowledge in several of these areas including Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, approaches to Cancer Treatment and Photosynthesis. The day will also include a guided tour of the new Wellcome Collection.

Poetry: Metre and Structure with Wendy Cope
Monday 21st June, Clare College, Cambridge
A day devoted to Poetry designed to reinvigorate English teachers for teachers at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. Developing students’ understanding and appreciation of form and structure in poetry can often be difficult: this course aims to inspire and equip delegates to meet this challenge. The day will be particularly helpful for those teaching poetry for examinations at GCSE and A level. The course covers the National Curriculum Key Concepts of Cultural and Critical Understanding, and specifically addresses AO2 for GCSE, AS and A Level. The Cold War - The latest research and debates
Wednesday 7th July, The Edgwarebury Hotel. Elstree
A day devoted to the Cold War, directly relevant for all teachers of KS3, GCSE and A Level History and for teachers of Government and Politics. Dr Martin Ruehl from the University of Cambridge will introduce the topic and the afternoon session will feature a talk from Andrei Ostalski, a former employee of the TASS news agency who will give delegates a personal view on this fascinating and highly relevant area of modern History.

Evolution, Conservation and Biodiversity
Thursday 8th July, Chester Zoo
A day designed for Biology teachers at KS4 and KS5, dedicated to the latest research in evolution and animal conservation. Delegates will also have an opportunity to consider the effects of deforestation and global warming on species diversity first hand as the day features a tour of the zoo. Those attending will:
- Gain an insight into some of the latest research in evolution and animal conservation
- Hear about conservation in action and tour the zoo to see this first hand

How Science Works - Forces and Motion
Wednesday 14th July, Physics Factory Birmingham
A day devoted to forces and motion, from the quantum to the cosmic level. Delegates attending the day will gain an overview of forces and motion in their quantum and Newtonian contexts, update their knowledge of the latest research in Particle Physics, Materials Science and solar system exploration and consider ways to enrich their teaching of Forces and Motion to pupils of all backgrounds and abilities. The day will be relevant for those teaching Physics at KS3, 4 and 5.
