Fearns Community Sports College

This academic year we issued all year six pupils due to join Fearns Community Sports College with a literacy passport in their team colour. They were issued at a New Parents’ Evening at the end of the summer term. Our intention was for them to continue to read and write over the summer break, to negate the learning dip which can occur between Key Stages 2 and 3. The passport contained reading and award activities relating to a variety of genres. We forged a link with our local library, so that pupils could get their passport stamped before they move to the next genre. Fearns Community Sports College - passport

There were also research activities to do with the inspirational sports figures who inspired the school’s teams. At the end of the passport we included some additional activities to be completed when they arrived at school in September. We found this incredibly successful, with a very high percentage of pupils entering school with a passport filled with stamps. We found our pupils to be enthusiastic and excited about reading and we have plans to redesign the passport for 2010 to include SEAL and PLaTS objectives.

Fearns Community Sports College is a comprehensive, co-educational, day school in Lancashire, which caters for children of all ability, between the ages of 11 and 16 years.
