Marsden Heights Community College
Marsden Heights Community College is a multi-cultural 11-16 community college that works in partnership with a multitude of agencies to develop aspiration and confidence in the young people it serves in the north east of Lancashire. Since its inauguration over two years ago, as a result of the amalgamation of two previously existing High schools and as part of the East Lancashire Building Schools for the Future project in Burnley and Pendle, Marsden Heights is justly proud of the steady and continuous improvement in GCSE results and the holistic development of its students.
Our engagement with the Prince’s Teaching Institute has come through our History Department (part of our Faculty of Exploration). As a result of our involvement, we now have students taking their GCSE a year early, with the opportunity to take AS History also in year 11. We have shared resources with excellent schools all over the UK and our schemes of work are far more focused and effective as a result. With encouragement from the Institute, we have forged working links with our nearest 6th form college and we are looking to widen these links to form a History Forum with other colleges and schools in the area within the next year.
All this, and more, has been achieved since our Subject Leader for History attended the Summer School at Crewe. I cannot stress strongly enough how absolutely inspirational the activities arranged for her were. For her to be able to meet and talk to Cambridge professors, whose chosen area of study matched the interests of our gifted and talented students, is just one example of how the Prince’s Institute has helped raise awareness as to the art of the possible. Our Subject Leader for History believes that deciding to participate in the Schools Programme is quite possibly one of her best decisions.
I look forward to our continued relationship with the Prince's Teaching Institute and developing this further in the future.
