Year 12 Historians discussing the nature of the English constitution in the 1620s (October 2009)The most significant development undertaken by the History Department at Parkstone Grammar School since joining The Prince’s Teaching Institute Programme last summer is introducing greater diversity into the A Level syllabus by focusing on the seventeenth century instead of a predominantly twentieth century content. We are keen to broaden our students’ experience of early modern history and distinguish our content from parallel subjects such as Politics. We now study the reign of Charles 1, the English Civil Wars, the Interregnum, the Restoration and the Glorious Revolution. Year 10 Historians visit La Boiselle Crater on World War One Battlefields visit to the Somme (April 2009)

This has involved the staff in considerable research of the period to consolidate our subject knowledge as well as preparing new schemes of work. Student enrichment of the subject through trips remains a priority. For example, we are now preparing a Year 13 residential trip to the Cromwellian sites of Cambridgeshire and the Fens to bring our new topics to life. In addition, we continue to take all Year 9 students to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the vast majority of our Year 10s (81 this year) to the World War Battlefields of Year 9 students visiting H.M.S. Victory (October 2009)France and Belgium.
