Penwortham Girls' High School
At the heart of our vision as a Specialist Humanities and Music College lie the core elements of Communication, Creativity and Community Collaboration. For the English Department, as one of the lead subjects within the Specialism, membership of the P.T.I. Schools Programme has encouraged us to step back and evaluate our practice, as well as inspiring us to seek out new ways of engaging, motivating and challenging our pupils.
Two of our key aims are to collaborate with other academic departments and to further promote reading for pleasure. Last year saw the successful launch of a KS3 Reading Champions group, which included participation in The Children’s Book Of The Year Competition, running assemblies and competitions, as well as leading an ‘Interactive Soundscape’ event, which linked literature with Art, Music and Drama.
Collaboration with History is a key focus for us this year. A joint unit on the First World War has been designed to enable Year 9 pupils to consolidate their knowledge and skills, and to understand the impact upon the individual, as well as local, national and global significance. The project will culminate in our ‘We Remember’ evening, which will celebrate pupils’ achievements.
Penwortham Girls' High School is a girls' comprehensive school located in Preston, Lancashire, with pupils aged between 11-16 years.
