South Wirral High School
South Wirral High School embraces fully the philosophy of The Prince’s Teaching Institute and its commitment to improving children’s education in State schools. The English Department has had success right from the beginning of this Academic year, with an increased up-take of 6th Form students wishing to do English Literature at A Level. This was achieved by a thorough recruitment drive by the Department during Year 11 and through the enthusiasm of staff being communicated to the students. This enthusiasm was enhanced through taking part in the PTI’s Residential at Crewe Hall.
A further aim was to ensure that our younger students had opportunities to see live performances of some of the plays that we study in English. Year 9 have just had a most enjoyable day out when they went to see a remarkable production of ‘Our Day Out’ at The Royal Court in Liverpool.
Another of the PTI’s aims is “to create stronger links between academic departments in schools” and this is also one of our targets. To this end, the English and Drama Departments have worked together much more closely. Published playwright, Paul Goetzee, has worked with both Departments to produce a unit of work based on Script Writing. This skill is taught in English to Year 7 and the Drama Department use the scripts for practical lessons and performance.
South Wirral High School is a mixed school, with pupils from year 7 to year 13, located in Eastham, Wirral.
