English department

Despite the ever-increasing pressures on the requirements of the English exams, we continue to run a rich extracurricular programme at Gumley.

The after school Creative Writing Club welcomes 20 or so Key Stage 3 students to hone their writing skills for short stories, poetry and scripts. A magazine publication of their work is produced at the end of each year.

Our Poetry Festival continues to be a popular evening, with our own student Poet Laureate introducing the visiting poet, who, for the past two years, has been Joelle Taylor. What a poet! The performance of her poetry, as well as her individualised comments on the students’ poems, is an antidote to the unsettling stories making today’s headlines.

One of the highlights of this year has been the Year 11 theatre trip to the play of Pigeon English. This was followed by a visit from none other than the author Stephen Kelman himself, who kept the students enthralled with stories from his own experience of growing up on a council estate.

Geography department

At KS4 and KS5, we have hosted a series of 'Careers in the Humanities' events in order to promote Geography by inviting ex-students who have pursued exciting careers in these fields to come in and share their experiences with our students. Having taken inspiration from the excellent work done at other schools within the programme, we have also organized a successful series of ‘Challenge Seminars' for students in Year 10, 11 and 12.

Gumley House Convent School is a girls' comprehensive for 11-18 year olds, based in Hounslow, West London.
