Why I support The Prince's Teaching Institute

Keith Breslauer

My core ethos of giving is to empower people to achieve their full potential and support initiatives which have a multiplier effect and directly reach the areas of society where support is needed most.

The Prince’s Teaching Institute fits perfectly with that ethos as a charity that’s really dealing with challenging issues in the state education sector and getting results. The hard reality is that in 2016 professional development for teachers is not mandatory. Every day children across the UK are being taught by teachers who are not knowledgeable in their subject or who have lost their passion for teaching.

I believe that every child deserves a great education, inspired by knowledgeable, passionate teachers – and that’s exactly what The Prince’s Teaching Institute delivers. It is an absolutely phenomenal cause and it ticks all my boxes as a multiplier. What I like particularly about The Prince’s Teaching Institute is the efficiency of its model. It costs less than £3 per child per annum, thanks to the leveraging effect of working with subject leaders and heads in schools, and over 90p in every pound spent goes directly to the charitable activities.

I am proud to be involved with The Prince’s Teaching Institute, as a donor, corporate supporter and member of its Development Committee, and to play a role in raising the aspirations of our next generation.

When I visited Holland Park Community School, I was struck by the way the teachers had turned the school around through sheer dedication and hard work. In 1997, the school was heavily criticised by Ofsted for poor academic standards and discipline. Holland Park is a school where 50% of children speak English as a second language, and over 30% are on Free School Meals (the National Average for FSM is 15%).

Today, the school is rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and features in The Good Schools Guide. It is the teachers who are fundamental to this transformation. All of the teachers I met there impressed upon me how pleased they were to be engaged with The Prince's Teaching Institute and the crucial role that the Institute plays in raising teaching standards. This is one of the key reasons I support The Prince's Teaching Institute.

The PTI is a unique organisation, providing subject-based professional development and inspiration to teachers where none exists. The fact that teachers in this country have no requirement to do any training throughout their careers is, for me as a professional, mind-boggling and simply unacceptable. I am delighted to be involved with the PTI, both as a donor and part of its Development Committee, and will continue to support its charge to improve education for our future generations.
